Orange Universal 2019

An Off-Campus Multicultural Student Center

The design of Orange Universal is part of a Senior Thesis project. In the spring of 2018, a video was released of members in the Theta Tau fraternity acting out extremely racist and degrading content. While this was a largely publicized event displaying culture clash on the Syracuse University campus, there are still micro-aggressions that students of different cultures continue to experience everyday. Our university continues to renovate and build new interiors with an entirely western perspective, unsympathetic to its diverse group of users. There is no built environment under the university’s umbrella that fosters cross-cultural communication and acceptance amongst students. The Orange Universal student center, utilizes Ohio State University’s Intercultural Engagement Model to combat culture clash in Syracuse Universities community, by promoting interaction and discourse across cultures. The programming of the student center is directly influenced by the model.

Gauntt Cafe.jpg

The cafe will serve an array of foods special to the various cultures represented on campus, and will have an ever changing menu. The sharing of food in a setting that offers many different table arguments, to support the traditional eating styles of different cultures, allows the users to partake in an experience of a peers cultural foodway.
